About

Hello there! I am Ben Wilkinson, and this is my blog!

I am a 17-year-old A-level student from Cambridge, UK. I previously worked part-time for a small games company as Chief Technical Officer and Lead Cross-Platform Developer.

I was given my first computer when I was four or five, and from there I learned the ins and outs of a computer, which soon came in handy when I arrived at a school which outsourced its IT support. I quickly became responsible for solving problems, and before I knew it I was self-taught expert in systems maintenance by the time I was ten.

It was then that my dad taught me HTML, and from there on I have been fascinated even more so by computers and the internet. Soon my dad became even busier, and didn’t have time to continue teaching me more stuff. I soon became frustrated by an inability to create dynamic online content and got learning PHP, along with the occasional help from my dad.

A few years passed and I ended up with a new, blank computer with which I could do whatever the heck I wanted to as I was the system administrator. I installed Visual Studio, and through the help of the internet, I dived in at the deep end with C++ – as a 12-year-old.

It was all too much to take in, and so I put that learning project on hiatus, from which I sat around mindlessly doing nothing becoming evermore frustrated with myself over time. I soon took up Visual Basic, and after being frustrated once more, though this time at it being too easy, I took up C#.

I was later approached by my local Scout troop to build them a website, and whilst that fell through (The scout group co-ordinator decided against it in a rather discriminating way – “I don’t care how good he is, I will not have a thirteen year old building us a website!”), I jumped right back on the web development bandwagon, putting together websites for people who were friends of friends I met on the internet and recommended to.

I was now marching into my fourteenth year on this planet, and armed with numerous Raspberry Pis, won from being an exceptionally talented computing student, and the many old computers that I had been handed down over the years, I set out on a journey to run my own network, through which I learnt an awful lot about the moral issues involved with running a network (Which later came in handy when my school began spying on us)

Push came to shove and I was now a Network and Systems Administrator, who needed something else to do to pass the time…

In September 2014, I was approached by a long-term friend of mine who was venturing boldly into the game development industry, and wanted a sidekick with a considerable portfolio under their arm to help guide him along where he was unable to guide himself. That, and write games with him.

Unfortunately, the ‘writing games with him’ bit didn’t quite work out because I have a deep-founded hatred of Java with its annoying updater, which needs to be run as it wants to patch serious security issues which I don’t want.

I am now a Node.JS developer and Systems and Networks Administrator. Check me out on GitHub!

Ben Wilkinson, October 2014, mildly update December 2016 - Merry Christmas!
